Marty Kuehnert,

Professor of Tohoku University, frequently gives lectures on the differences between Japanese and Western cultures as seen through sports. In Japan Kuehnert is known as a tough critic of the sports environment which he says permits, if not encourages, incompetence, creating problems much like those facing the government and big business. The crisis is so significant in sports says Kuehnert, "all the current Japanese stars who feel they can be competitive abroad want to defect." Kuehnert talks about the "muscle drain" which is now following many years of "brain drain."
